I think this is what I’m trying to do with my music – the career I have spent years building requires being able to play the piano for nine or so hours a day, which is clearly beyond me now. Trapeze artist, indeed. So I am now looking for other ways to work in the circus – teaching more, playing when I can but committing to fewer performances because of the unpredictability of the disease, writing music (that one may never be part of my career, but still at least SOMEWHAT related to the “circus”), writing ABOUT music, etc. It’s not the easiest thing to make this adjustment, but I’ve come to believe it’s better than turning my back on music, or continuing to try to swing from trapezes (so to speak).

I am currently pursuing a doctorate in music, which I started before the onset of my RA. I had planned to be finished by now – I am not. But I have learned that it’s okay to move slowly. At the end of the road, I will have the doctorate, regardless of how long it took me to get there, and I will have taken care of myself along the way, instead of forcing myself into a timetable that no longer works for me.
