I’m not that surprised to hear the airline staff were not brilliant. We had terrible trouble with BA – half the staff were wonderful and the other half just acted as if I was disabled deliberately to inconvenience them, although actually I think it was more that they felt all passengers inconvenienced them. Glad you got there safe in the end and hope you are enjoying the break.

Yes, persons in wheelchairs are entitled to preferential treatment. I heard on the radio this morning that one of the airlines will no longer move families with small children to the front of the line. Anyway, good for you for standing your ground.

I am glad you are safe and hopefully in the US by now :-) One time years ago I had an engine fire while flying. We were lucky to make it to Atlanta. And it was during a horrific thunder storm as well. It sounds like the airlines did a pretty good job of putting you up in a hotel and taking care of you. Of course I am glad you put your foot down (so to say) and made them move you and the others in wheelchairs to the front of the line. Common sense in my book. I am glad you stood your ground and fought for your rights and the rights of the others. Sometimes we have to be a little forward to be treated fairly and I am glad you had the courage to speak up.
