You’ve taught me so much about my own journey through RA, so I hope the good-healing vibes I’m sending help you, too.

Hope you are recovering/recovered nicely. And I have found that surgery can put added stress on the old ra. In my case it was several weeks after the surgery that I had a bad crash and burn scene to face. I am hoping your ra behaved nicely for you. And yes…chocolate is always the best medicine :-)

Didn’t even know I had gall stones until one got stuck and caused pancreatitis. I’ve been in and out of hospital all my life so it was a strange realisation that this was to be my first operation since 1970. Spent two days on an antibiotic drip before op and two days afterwards to ensure that bugs didn’t get free rein because of my immunosuppressants. I suppose for me the surgery was just one more step in my medical journey. I spent the day in ER waiting to find out if I’d be admitted researching gall bladder op methods. Mine was, thankfully, able to be done by keyhole surgery so the pain (even on laughing) was all but gone in a few days. As for preparation for the surgery, I knew I had a good surgeon and was in a good hospital, arranging those things was all I thought about as “preparation”, rest was up to them :).

Even more important is the recovery phase and to not overdo (it’s difficult when you’re bored out of your mind and sick and tired of being “recoverying”). I would caution people, however, not to use gum, pastilles, or even sprays “in the hours before surgery.” I’m not sure whether you didn’t tell the medical staff you’d done this or if things are different in the US, but this is contrary to the “fasting” you’re required to do and you would have been rescheduled for surgery on a later date. And yes, some chocolates stashed in the hospital nightstand are definitely required protocol. Recover well!
