Thank You, Arthritis Today!

Dear Editor of Arthritis Today,

Arthritis Today Oct 2009Two months ago to the day, I wrote an Open Letter To Arthritis Today in which I asked your publication to please provide more visibility of men living with arthritis. I had just reviewed the archive issues that were available on the Arthritis Foundation website, and was unable to find a man on the cover – even though men comprise 41% of the general arthritis population in the United States.

Within a matter of hours, you responded with “Be sure to check out the cover of our next issue (available mid- to late October). I think you’ll like it.” [Response From Arthritis Today] Your quick response sounded promising, and I could not wait to see what was in store for the upcoming issue of Arthritis Today.

Yesterday, I decided to visit the Arthritis Today website in order to see if any information was available on the November-December 2009 issue. I was happy to see not only a man – but a man living with rheumatoid arthritis – on the cover!

Matthew C. Iseman (born January 22, 1971 in Denver, Colorado, USA) is a U.S. comedian, actor, and television host, who began his career as a physician. He was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in 2002, at age 31.

Thank you so much for starting to provide more visibility of men living with rheumatoid arthritis. I look forward to similar features that your publication might publish in the future!

Sincerely,

Rheumatoid Arthritis Guy

Hooray! Congrats to you- and the other men- living with RA for your representation in the magazine. You do so much good work in giving RA a voice.

  2. MissDazey says:

Great! Of course, we all wish it had been you on the cover, but will settle for this nice looking young man. We have a nephew in early 50′s just diagnosed with RA, I’ll be sure to tell him about this magazine.

How are things going in general..not just RA?

  3. Leslie says:

That is awesome! More men, young women, and children with JRA need to be on the cover….RA doesn’t discriminate.

ARTHRITIS TODAY is to be commended for responding so quickly to your posting regarding an OPEN LETTER TO ARTHRITIS TODAY in reference to the need for more visibility of men living with arthritis!–and for taking action right away to do something about this. ARTHRITIS TODAY might want to consider featuring stories monthly in their magazine about real, everyday people living with arthritis. This can be a real inspiration to those others that live with this disease. One of the main reasons I subscribe to and/or buy the Weight Watchers magazine is for the real life stories that they feature–it’s always the first thing I turn to and read right away. I’m a bit partial since I’m RA Guy’s Mom, but I second MissDazey’s comment that “we all wish it could have been you”…who knows?–maybe someday we’ll see regular people’s stories & pictures featured in ARTHRITIS TODAY. Personally, I can’t wait for that day! RA Guy’s Mom
