The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and its partners works to keep the public informed of the most current drug shortages. Shortages can adversely affect drug therapy, compromise or delay medical procedures, and result in medication errors.

Leflunomide Tablets – June 24, 2011

Reasons for the Shortage

  • Apotex has an import ban on all of their solid medications. Apotex has discontinued leflunomide.
  • Teva has leflunomide tablets on shortage due to unavailability of raw material.
  • Sandoz has leflunomide tablets on shortage due to increased demand and delay of raw material.

Methotrexate Injection – June 23, 2011

Reasons for the Shortage

  • Sandoz has recalled their 2 mL and 10 mL methotrexate preservative-free vials.
  • APP has discontinued their methotrexate 25 mg/mL (with preservative) 2 mL vials.
  • Hospira has methotrexate on shortage due to increased demand for the product.

    I was switched to two smaller-dose leflunomide (Arava) tablets from one larger dose tablet several months ago. The overall dosage remains the same, and I haven’t had any trouble getting refills. So far.

    Methotrexate Injection is the only thing that has help me. I have Polymyositis. This is the first time I have not be able to get my medication. I hope it come available soon.

    I live in Jamaica and just tried to get my methotrexate tabs re-filled. I was told at the pharmacy that there is a shortage on that now. They called around and no one has it available.
