Doctors Failing To Diagnose Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients

More than half of rheumatoid arthritis sufferers have to visit their GP three times before they are diagnosed as doctors are not being trained to spot the symptoms, a charity report claims.

Low diagnosis rates and a lack of understanding of rheumatoid arthritis by GPs are still rife three years after a report aimed at improving services for people with the condition, a survey by Arthritis Care found.

The charity more than half a million people in Britain who suffer from the condition are “systematically and appallingly let down by the NHS” with £8 billion a year being spent on services which are in “disarray”.

Most of the recommendations made three years ago in a Public Accounts Committee report aimed at improving rheumatoid arthritis care are yet to be implemented, the charity added.

The Telegraph: Physiotherapists Banned From Touching Patients

Physiotherapists have been banned from touching their patients in a cost-cutting move described as “barmy” by experts.

Patients referred to physiotherapists for treatment in Nottingham will no longer receive hands-on treatment – but will be directed to websites where they can learn exercises for themselves.

Patients in Rushcliffe are given “advice and guidance” and directed to websites and information leaflets where they can learn exercises for themselves.

Phil Gray, chief executive of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, said: “They seem to have invented a new form of physiotherapy that no one has heard of – do-not-touch physiotherapy,”

“Physiotherapists can’t actually physically touch you at all under this system. It is deeply unscientific.”

New York Times: Adrienne Rich, 1929-2012

“Adrienne Rich, a poet of towering reputation and towering rage, whose work — distinguished by an unswerving progressive vision and a dazzling, empathic ferocity — brought the oppression of women and lesbians to the forefront of poetic discourse and kept it there for nearly a half-century, died on Tuesday at her home in Santa Cruz, Calif. She was 82.

The cause was complications of rheumatoid arthritis, with which she had lived for most of her adult life, her family said.”
